My Solo Travels to Honduras! Where I stayed, what I did, and why I’d go back! 🇭🇳✨
I spent 3 days in Roatán, Honduras solo traveling as a Black Woman and baby… I absolutely loved it!
Yes, ROATÁN.
Roatan is a Caribbean island off the coast of Honduras that people whisper about like it’s a secret…it’s a hidden gem for sure.
First of all, why didn’t anybody tell me there were so many Black people there? Because I landed and immediately felt like, oh… this is a vibe. I love when a place surprises me in the best ways… because I ignorantly didn’t know.
So, I’m going to tell you everything about the experience. But first, a little history.
The water as we got ready to land!
A Little Honduras History
Roatán is part of Honduras, which is located in Central America between Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.
The country was home to the ancient Maya civilization, and you can still visit ruins like Copán Ruinas on the mainland…I didn’t get a chance to go because I was there for such a short time.
Along the northern coast and Bay Islands, there is a strong Garifuna presence. The Garifuna are Afro-Indigenous people with roots in West Africa and the Caribbean, which explains the beautiful cultural mix and why I felt that familiar Black diaspora energy when I landed.
Honduras gained independence from Spain in 1821, and Roatán itself has a unique history of British influence, pirates, and trade routes. So yes… the island has layers.
Getting There ✈️
I booked my flight with American Airlines and my round-trip ticket was less than $500.
My Flight Path:
Memphis 5:21am —-> Miami arrival at 8:50am
Miami 12:10pm —-> Roatan Honduras 12:30pm
It was a 2 hour flight, but the time difference made it seem like I basically travelled backwards in time lol.
For a Caribbean island? A flight under $500? I’m not arguing with that… it was worth it in my eyes.
Roatán is part of Honduras but feels like its own little world. It sits in the Caribbean Sea and is known for its beaches, coral reefs, and laid-back island culture and I enjoyed experiencing every part of it!

Where I Stayed (My First Bed & Breakfast Experience)
Okay so this was my first time ever staying in a bed and breakfast and I get it now on why so many people love them. They are called Fisher’s Landing Boutique Hotel.
I’m used to staying in places with my own space for everything, but I truly feel this experience was worth it. There was one other couple staying there and I was able to make friends with the woman. We did a couple of the excursions together as her husband completed his dive trainings.
The place had:
2 rooms upstairs
2 rooms downstairs
Private bathrooms
Shared kitchen downstairs
An Infinity Pool that was BREATHTAKING!
And they cooked breakfast for us every morning
The Common Area
It is owned by a retired couple from the U.S. who built the place themselves. Talk about Goals!
Imagine retiring and saying, “Let’s build an oceanfront sanctuary in Roatán.” I respect it.
The house was upscale and cozy. All around good energy.
And the pool? REFRESHING!
Relaxing by the pool
The pool changes colors at night!
Breathtaking.
Let’s Talk About My Room!
The rooms are decorated with Tropical Caribbean vibes. Mine was full of birds and plants….The bed? VERY COMFORTABLE! See the video of the room below.
Things I Did (Because I Love to Explore!)
Jungle Top Zipline & Animal Sanctuary 🐒🦜🦥
I went to an animal sanctuary and saw:
Beautiful tropical birds
Sloths
Monkeys
The sloths were my favorite because they move like they’re permanently in meditation. Even though one of them clawed me bad. It was so interested to feel their fur.
He stole my hat shortly after this picture lol
This was my first time ever zip lining an I managed to do all 16 lines!! Talk about facing fears! Shoutout to my guide, who ended up being my island guide after!
After ziplining and meeting my “little” friend (in the words of my Granny lol) we kept in contact and he ended up showing me around the island on his motorcycle.
Yes. A local.
Yes. He was Handsome.
Yes. He became my Tour guide.
I highly recommend meeting a local to show you around. It changes the experience completely. You see the real spots, not just the “tourist package” version. And if he’s fine? That’s just a bonus. I don’t make the rules. Lol
We rode around the island, went to different beaches, saw old structures, and just explored.
Swimming with Dolphins! 🐬
And let me tell you about swimming with the dolphins because THAT was a whole experience. The water was about 20 feet deep, crystal clear, and they gave us flippers and goggles so we could really move with them instead of just floating around awkwardly. Unfortunately, I didn’t take my phone because I wasn’t sure if it would withstand the depth of water.
When I say it was surreal feeling a dolphin brush past me as we swam by each other… I mean you can feel how strong and smooth they are at the same time. They were very gentle but powerful at the same time. We watched them do tricks, jump, spin, and show off like the divas they are.
I even got to kiss one which felt unreal, like okay Disney princess era activated. And the fun fact of the day? Female dolphins are polygamous. I learned that and just stood there like… honestly, I respect it 😂🐬
The Beaches & Landscape 🌴
The beauty of the landscape was my favorite part.
The ocean was clear.
The beaches were soft on my feet.
The sunrises were peaceful.
The sunsets felt soooo cinematic.
Honduras sits along the Caribbean, so you’re getting that blue water, palm tree, slow-life energy.

The Food 🍤
The seafood?
Absolutely amazing.
Fresh. Flavorful. Well seasoned.
Most meals were mid-range pricing, about $20 for a nice sized plate. Not cheap cheap, but not “robbery” either. Fair.
If you love seafood, you will eat good.
Would I Go Back?
Abso-fuckin-lutely!
Three days in Roatán felt like a teaser. I could’ve easily stayed a week.
What I loved most:
The landscape
The ocean
The sunrise and sunset
The warmth of the people
The unexpected cultural familiarity
Roatán surprised me in the best way.
If you’re thinking about visiting Honduras, don’t sleep on Roatán. Go with an open mind. Meet locals. Explore beyond the obvious. Try the seafood. Wake up for sunrise at least once.
And if you end up with a motorcycle tour guide? Just smile and enjoy the ride (and view) 😌🏍️🌊
