Why Central and South America Have My Heart 🌎💫
As I prepare to begin my new nomadic journey, one region calls to me more than anywhere else: Central and South America. These lands feel alive to me, pulsing with nature, culture, and spirit. Every time I’ve visited, I’ve felt both welcomed and transformed.
What I love most is how natural life feels there. The food is fresh and vibrant, the people are inviting, and the culture is rich with traditions that pull you in. There is a strong sense of community that feels both grounding and expansive at the same time. When I am there, I feel at one with nature and more connected to myself.
So far, I’ve had the joy of experiencing Costa Rica, Honduras, Belize, and Colombia, and each country has left me with unforgettable memories. It is hard to pick a favorite because they all carry their own strengths, but if I had to choose, Colombia has my heart right now.
I have been to Cartagena, Medellín, and Santa Marta, and I enjoyed both cities. Cartagena is beautiful, but I do not like the sexual tourism that has become common there. The last time I visited, I could feel how much things had changed. On my next trip, I want to explore more rural areas where I can be more deeply immersed in the land and culture. My long-term goal is to one day have property in Colombia, a place where I can root myself while still flowing as a nomad. In the meantime, Colombia has a digital nomad visa available for nomads who can prove an income at least 3x the local cost of living. When I go to Colombia, this will most likely be my first option.
I still dream about expanding my journey further. Brazil and Peru are at the top of my list. My Spanish coach during my doctoral program was from Peru, and she always spoke of it with such pride that I knew I needed to experience it for myself. I have also had vivid dreams of visiting there, which makes me believe the land itself is calling me. The history, especially the Aztecan and Incan structures, fascinates me, and I cannot wait to stand among them and feel that ancestral energy.
This first year of my nomadic life will be spent weaving deeper into this part of the world. I want to continue immersing myself, learning, and expanding through the connections I make along the way. For me, Central and South America are more than destinations. They are teachers, mirrors, and reminders that life is meant to be lived in flow with the earth and community.
